INTRODUCTION
The Syracuse chapter of SCORE typically accomplishes over 750 face-to-face counseling sessions per year, resulting in the creation of 20 – 30 new businesses a year, as well as assisting existing businesses through typical business problems and opportunities. "SCORE has been and still is our business’ most valuable partner. We initially received advice on the importance of keeping accurate records, collecting sales tax, and having enough money saved to cover all expenses in the first year of business. He got us started on the right foot. That was 1987.
Later that year we opened our store in Skaneateles with two hundred and fifty bolts of fabric. Our space was 650 square feet. As the years went by, we enlarged our space. After taking over the area of four businesses, we were up to 2,800 square feet. A few years later, we needed more room and a building of our own.
We contacted SCORE again. We had lots of questions. Should we build or buy? Where should we relocate?
We were introduced to Mr. Bud Roth from Score. Bud assisted us by introducing and accompanying us to bankers and an accountant. He also provided us with invaluable advice in the construction of our new store, site preparation, and the town government planning board.
After the new store was up and running, Bud advised us on advertising, publicity, inventory and other business concerns.
I am convinced Patchwork Plus is what it has become because of the assistance of our SCORE mentors.
This month we were honored in Pittsburgh, PA as a Better Homes and Gardens Quilt Sampler “Top Shop” in North America.Our beautiful 5,000 square foot building houses over 8,000 bolts of fabric, hundreds of yarns, and Bernina sewing machines. I am happy to say thanks to SCORE for helping to make it all possible.”
